Curriculum

I am of Italian origin and I was born in France 58 years ago.

I started studying fine arts in Strasbourg that I had to interrupt quickly because I was at the same time studying medicine (and of course the human body which has always fascinated me).

After my doctorate, I took up a sculptor ‘s training first on stone and then on marble (Botros in Carrara – Italy) for a dozen years. But I felt limited in my artistic expression with this technique and from this frustration is born the desire to explore the metal. I was looking for a material that supports a high intensity welding (> 1000 degrees) and that allows the light to pass. (It is while walking with my wife in the forest that I found a swarm of abandoned wasps and I discovered this wonderful alveolar structure, and I immediately made the connection with the shape of the nuts. The first tests were conclusive and I have developed this technique gradually for nearly 8 years.

I am a professional artist registered with the house of artists, with a number of Siret and who declares his income (I keep a medical activity part-time in the morning)

For the original technique :

I use about 2000 to 6000 nuts per tread (up to 10000 for the largest ones). Each nut is welded 4 to 5 times with the neighboring nuts, this represents about 8000 to 30 000 welding points ,that is  between 150 Hours and 600 hours of work . I  first realize an earth model that I reproduce to scale with a complex compass system (called a cross of focus, used in stone sculpture). It is a rather difficult, tiring work , which requires great concentration and physical strength, but I love it and I do it with sincerity and with all my heart. Each sculpture is unique and can receive different types of treatment (waxed, rusty, patina) but each one receives a specific protective treatment depending on whether it is exposed inside (preferable) or outside (possible).

Interests of my work :

I diverted the nut which is an industrial material, cold, not very glamorous to make it something sensual, all curved, which takes light very well. This counter-foot is interesting and illustrates the fact that our humanity, capable of so much ugliness, can also turn ugliness into beauty. It is enough to have a little manual work, a dose of intelligence and a lot of heart, and here is the artist

Finally, one of the interests of my work is the transparency, the play of light and shade. With a suitable lighting, one can project a shadow that has a very surprising graphic effect and as most of my sculptures are mounted on axes that they can rotate on itself, thus to move with a dialogue between the sculpture and its shadow (between the 3D and the 2D) and it becomes kinetic, more dynamic and more alive.
