Curriculum

Marco Gallotta is an italian-born, New York City-based artist. he received his associate’s degree in fashion illustration and a bachelor’s degree in general illustration from the Fashion Institute of Technology. He grew up in Battipaglia, a town in the Campania region of southwestern Italy, before moving to New York City in 1998. His artistic craft consists mostly of paper-cutting techniques, drawing, painting, and printmaking.

At age 18, marco left Battipaglia on a quest to explore one of his deepest passions: nature. He moved to the Trentino region in the italian alps where he worked as an alpine guide. Mountain exploration, contemplation of landscapes, and close examination of nature’s minute details became régime for Marco during this time. Observation, handcraft, mankind and nature later became the topics of his art production in an early series called ‘deconstructing nature,’ largely inspired by this phase in his life.

In the early 1990s, Marco moved once again to London where he was instantly drawn to the big city lifestyle and street culture. He took a job as a peddler, which, although uninspiring, allowed him time to begin exploring a new fascination – close yet inconspicuous observation of people. Marco’s new-found interest in people’s physical features and their different body forms subsequently became an important part of his production.

In the late 1990s, Marco began working as a promoter for a european street basketball tour. The job entailed frequent travel, which enabled Marco to experience different cultures and lifestyles in various countries across Europe, includingFrance, the Netherlands, Germany, Geneva, and Belgium. During this nomadic period in his life, Marco continued to deepen his knowledge of rich european art history and culture, and embarked upon a new curiosity in the contemporary local art scene.

Eventually, Marco returned to his native Italy, where, in 1998, he met and fell in love with his would-be wife Sabrina, a native new yorker and student who was studying italian language and literature abroad in padua, a culturally distinguished italian center. The two decided to leave the european life behind and moved to Boston, Massachusetts. it was then that Marco decided to pursue a formal art education at bunker hill community college. Having a deep historical imprint and an already well-developed artistic taste, his efforts and undeniable talents were both encouraged and applauded by his art professors.

In 2000, Marco was accepted and enrolled as an art student at the fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York City, ranked among the top fashion schools in the world. While at FIT, Marco had the opportunity to study under the direction of well-known fashion illustrators like Jane Bixby-Weller and Bill Donovan, who later became his mentor.

Today, Marco resides with his wife and daughter in New York City, where he finds inspiration in its urbanscape, distinct artistic facets, and diverse population. He currently practices his craft in an intimate studio workshop in west Harlem. His vast expertise in mixed media techniques, including drawing, painting, and printmaking, add to his work a unique combination of artisan craftsmanship and graphic sensibility. Watercolors, inks, and graphite are intensified with wax coats, sharp cuts, and ingenious collages.
